16 Jun 2023 - Diamonds in the Sky

This workshop marked a significant milestone in my journey as a science educator because it was my first Stargazing Workshop under the twinkling canvas of the night sky.

To my surprise and delight, many lovely guests attended - families with children and curious elders from the local community. Each came with their curiosity as their compass and a love for nature in their hearts.

One moment, in particular, has made a permanent home in my heart. In an incredible stroke of serendipity, a young astronomer found something truly spectacular – a beautiful star cluster tucked away in the corner of the sky, gleaming like a handful of diamonds strewn across a black velvet cloth. I couldn't be more thrilled to see the young face light up with pure joy and excitement.

The night was filled with moments of stargazing, photographing, warm laughter and the soft murmur of fascination.

Inspired by the interests of one of our guests, we decided to turn our cameras upward and try to capture the starry night sky. Working as a team, we calibrated our cameras and trained them towards the luminous band that cut across the sky. As the shutter began to click, capturing the cosmic panorama, a silence fell upon us. We were holding our breath, waiting for the celestial wonder to be immortalized in our frames.

When we finally beheld the images, the results were breathtaking. The grand sweep of the Milky Way arched over the landscape like a luminescent bridge connecting distant cosmic shores. The photographs displayed an ethereal beauty, capturing the majesty of our galaxy, a silent testament to the grandeur of our universe.

The photos brought an additional layer of fulfilment - we were able to immortalize our shared experience under the arch of the Milky Way, capturing a beautiful memory that will forever echo that unforgettable night.

Tonight was the beginning of a journey, and I look forward to the many workshops that lie ahead. The universe, after all, is a vast and wondrous place, just waiting to be discovered.
